Great Southern UniCentres Secures Funds for Katanning Study Hub

Great Southern Universities Centre (GSU) and Regional Development Australia (RDA) Great Southern are delighted to announce the Great Southern region’s third study hub to be opened in Katanning early next year.

The universities centre’s plan to open the newest hub was chosen as a project for development as part of the Department of Education's Regional Universities Study Hub program. The initiative aims to enhance support for students residing in regional areas who face challenges accessing tertiary education.

Federal Education Minister Jason Clare's announcement of $16 million in funding for 10 new study hubs across five states signifies a significant step towards improving university enrolment and reducing attrition rates in regional areas. GSU is proud to be part of this transformative initiative, which will benefit communities across Australia.

GSU Director Mike Eastman said the funding approval for the Study Hub in Katanning is a testament to the dedication of the team and partners in advocating for enhanced educational support in the Great Southern region.

“We are really excited about the positive impact this initiative will have on the Katanning community. Research has shown that the presence of study hubs in communities definitely leads to increased university participation and reduced study attrition rates.”

Mr Eastman said the new hub would be uniquely suited to the community it was based in.

“The Study Hub in Katanning will provide a culturally aware study environment tailored to the needs of local students. We are dedicated to making higher education more accessible and successful for regional students and we believe that by taking a culturally sensitive approach, we will provide all the ingredients needed for student success.”

Simon Lyas, CEO of RDA Great Southern, emphasised the collaborative effort involved in securing the funding.

"We are proud to have worked with Great Southern Universities Centre, the Department of Education and Katanning Shire to bring this opportunity to the upper Great Southern. This Study Hub will not only serve as a valuable resource for students but is also expected to contribute to the economic and social development of the region."

The Katanning hub is one of ten locations selected for development under the Department of Education's latest round of funding.

“The RDA, as the governing body for the GSU, is committed to collaborating with the Shire of Katanning, local businesses, industry, and the community to create opportunities for residents to upskill, retrain, and obtain tertiary education.

“Students will have access to online study options with local, face-to-face student support, allowing them to pursue their education without leaving their home, families, support networks, and community.”

The facilities are expected to be available by early 2025. Those interested in expressing their interest or learning more about the Study Hub in Katanning are encouraged to contact GSU via admin@gsunicentre.edu.au.
